Your surgical oncology team

The surgical oncology team at Eastern is committed to exploring every treatment option available to you. The team is comprised of surgical oncologists, nurses, surgical technicians, anesthesiologists, and other cancer professionals with diverse expertise in treating all types and stages of cancer.
Our surgical oncologists are experienced in performing advanced surgical procedures for cancer.
“We have no rookies here. We don’t have people getting their feet wet. Everybody comes with years of experience,” says Dr. Standiford.
Dr. Standiford heads the Department of Surgical Oncology at CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center. With over 25 years of experience as a surgical oncologist, Dr. Standiford also serves as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff at the hospital.
In April 2009, Dr. Standiford was appointed to the position of National Clinical Director of Surgical Oncology and Perioperative Services at CTCA. Prior to joining CTCA, he held a number of appointments during his career, including Chair of the National Cancer Institute's Central Institutional Review Board.
Aside from Dr. Standiford, another surgical oncologist who is part of the team is Dr. Russell Mark Reisner. Dr. Reisner has over 12 years of surgical oncology experience. He specializes in soft tissue cancer and gastrointestinal oncology surgery. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery.
In addition to our surgical oncologists, some of the other members of the surgical oncology team include a physician’s assistant and wound care-certified registered nurse and surgical extender.
Coordinating your care
Before or after surgery, you may receive radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. Your surgical oncologist will collaborate with other CTCA specialties to coordinate your treatment plan. Since everyone is under one roof, your entire care team is in constant communication. They can pull knowledge and resources together to provide you with integrated, personalized experience.
Additionally, three times a week, the surgical oncology team participates in endorsement meetings. During these meetings, all the clinical disciplines come to the table together to share information regarding patient care. “CTCA is the only place I have seen where multidisciplinary care is the rule, not the exception,” says Dr. Reisner.
Working together, each member of your care team addresses your different needs throughout treatment to ensure you receive care for the whole person, not just the disease.
“Our approach of treating the person with cancer, rather than just treating the cancer is the way I have practiced throughout my career,” says Dr. Standiford.
From your viewpoint, your treatment plan will be completely seamless so you can focus solely on healing.
