Surgical Oncology: Patient Care

What to expect when you meet the surgical oncology team

If surgery is part of your treatment, you will visit with the surgical oncology team during your initial evaluation period at the hospital. Your surgical oncologist will take time to listen to your questions and concerns and discuss your surgical treatment options.

“We try to find a way to make patients feel like this is home when they are here. We support them so that being here isn’t scary,” says Dr. Standiford.

Unlike other facilities in which doctors typically do not have time to meet with new patients for more than 20 minutes, CTCA builds extra time into its patient care model.

“Here, our new patient appointments are typically an hour and follow-ups are 30 minutes. That’s the standard here. You have long appointments so you have time to take care of all the patient’s needs,” says Dr. Standiford.

Before surgery, you will meet with a nurse for a preoperative visit.  At this time, you will learn about what will happen before, during and after the procedure. We try to provide you with information the way you need it so you can feel comfortable about your surgery.

“It amazes me when people come here and tell us it is the first time that someone had sat down and talked with them, and not just told them what they have and what they need,” says Dr. Standiford.

In addition, prior to your procedure, you will meet with an anesthesiologist. Your anesthesiologist will be the one to administer anesthesia (a medication or other agent that causes insensibility to pain) so that you are not awake for the duration of the procedure.

Treating you like family

In addition to offering advanced treatments and medical expertise, the surgical oncology team will also provide attentive, compassionate care. Our doctors and other clinicians abide by the Mother Standard® of care. This means you come first and we will fight for you with every option available.

“I am thrilled to be practicing in a setting where this patient-centered approach, using innovative treatments, is the focus,” says Dr. Standiford. Dr. Reisner adds:  “The best thing about CTCA is working in a place where everyone shares the same belief—the patient comes first!”
