Your radiation oncology team

The Department of Radiation Oncology at Eastern is comprised of an experienced and diverse group of cancer professionals. Here, radiation oncologists work hand-in-hand with the other CTCA departments, including the Department of Radiology, to deliver advanced cancer therapies.

The radiation oncology team is led by Anna Saunders-Nero. The team consists of radiation oncologists, nurses, and board-certified radiation therapists. In addition to overseeing the Department of Radiation Oncology, Nero also serves as the Director of Radiology/Imaging.

One radiation oncologist who may become part of your CTCA care team is Dr. Mark Alden. Before attending medical school, Dr. Alden served as a pastor for five years. After earning his medical degree, he completed residency and fellowship programs in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. With Dr. Alden’s unique background, he will actively listen to you during your initial consultation and provide explanations in terms you can easily understand.

Dr. Lydia Komarnicky is another radiation oncologist on the team. Dr. Komarnicky graduated from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1981, and then trained in pathology and radiation oncology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Her background includes extensive clinical research and teaching experience.

As the hospital grows, the radiation oncology team continues to expand and welcome new doctors and support staff.

Coordinating your care during radiation therapy

Throughout your radiation treatment, your radiation oncology team will work closely with you to monitor your treatment regime. In addition, your radiation oncologist will collaborate with the other members of your multidisciplinary care team, including medical and surgical oncologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists.

Since everyone is under one roof, all your clinicians are in constant communication, sharing knowledge and resources. Additionally, three times a week, the radiation oncology team participates in endorsement meetings. During these meetings, all clinical areas come to the table together to share information regarding patient care.

This team approach allows your care team to provide you with a powerful combination of aggressive cancer therapies to fight the disease on all fronts.
