Medications
The Pharmacy will provide all your medications during your visit to CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center. “We compound everything here. All the drugs come from us,” says Rafter. The Pharmacy has nearly 3000 different medications in stock. The medications range from topicals, to orals, to parenteral nutrition, to chemotherapy drugs, to nutraceuticals and supplements.
According to Coyne, if you need a medication, CTCA will get it. At other hospitals, your choice of drugs may be limited to only the formulary drugs which the hospital is permitted to purchase.
Individualized approach
If chemotherapy is part of your treatment plan, pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians will prepare your medications based on orders from your medical oncologist. The chemotherapy dosage and regime will be completely customized to your individual needs.
Should you require Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), the pharmacy team also individualizes TPN according to what you are and are not eating. The TPN incorporates various levels of dextrose, proteins, amino acids, and lipids based on your needs. And, just as your needs change daily, so does TPN.
The Department of Pharmacy Services works closely with your dietitian, who will help calculate what you need to maintain a healthy nutritional status.
Pharmacy turnaround times
At Eastern, the turnaround time for patients to receive their prescriptions is extraordinarily fast. At most hospitals, there are set drop times when medications are delivered. At Eastern, a technician will deliver the medication as soon as it is ready. The drugs are usually delivered within 10 to 45 minutes. You and your family members/caregivers can also drop off and pick up supplements right on the premises.
