Time, attention and empowerment
Throughout your care, the pulmonary team will help answer your questions and do everything possible to make your life easier. Here, you don’t have to decide whether something is important enough to talk about because you only have a certain amount of time to meet with your doctor.
“The doctors here spend a lot of time with patients. I think when you allow more time and you are more open, your body language conveys that you are more open and listening. And the patients really respond to that. They’ll tell you things that you would never have heard in a regular hospital,” says Morrow.
By allowing more time for you to meet with your care team, you will feel better and more in control of the situation. In addition, open communication allows your clinicians to better personalize your care and make ongoing, appropriate adjustments to your treatment regime.
Morrow uses an example of a patient who told her: “The other day when I was walking back and forth to the bathroom, I was really short of breath.” At another hospital, Morrow says she may not have been in the room long enough to hear something like that. However, at CTCA, she says “You can actually find out what’s going on. So, when there are changes, and they can be little changes, you know it because the patients have told you. And they will tell you everything if you let them.”
The pulmonology team, and the rest of your care team, will also empower you to make informed decisions. “The patients here actually feel important in their own care. They feel like they have some control. Cancer is a disease where you don’t have a lot of control. Anytime you can give somebody back just that little bit of control, it can mean a world of difference,” says Morrow.
The Department of Inteventional Pulmonology strives to provide you with advanced options for lung cancer, and any cancer that has spread to your lungs, so you can fight the disease and maintain your quality of life. If you are looking for a cancer team that is willing to fight with you, you will find it here.
