Interventional Pulmonology

If you or a loved one is fighting lung cancer or any other cancer that has spread to the lung, CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center (Eastern) offers advanced options and quality care through the Department of Interventional Pulmonology.

Each year, people fighting lung cancer travel hundreds of miles, from states as far as Texas, Florida and Kentucky, to come to the Philadelphia hospital. They come in search of an aggressive, multidisciplinary approach to fighting the disease. When they get here, they find an expert cancer team that works together to provide a powerful combination of traditional and innovative treatment options.

“Everybody feels welcome here. You can have children and family here. If you want your spouse to stay with you all the time, that is okay,” says interventional pulmonology therapist Kathy Morrow.

What cancers does the Department of Interventional Pulmonology treat?

The Department of Interventional Pulmonology, a specialty within the Department of Surgical Oncology, provides advanced cancer treatments for any cancer that affects the lung. This includes primary lung cancer as well as other cancers that spread (metastasize) to the lung and airways. The team also treats lung problems, such as an obstruction in the airway, regardless of the type of cancer that caused the blockage.

Breast, colon, renal cell (kidney), melanoma, and esophageal are examples of common cancer types that spread to the lung and airways. When lung cancer spreads to other parts of the body, it commonly goes to the central nervous system, bone, liver, and lymph nodes.

The department also treats intensive care patients. In the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a doctor is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For instance, surgery patients who need a high level of care after a procedure may need to stay in the ICU for a period of time.
