As a medical oncologist and hematologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), Dr. Shayma Kazmi individualizes each patient’s treatment plan to fit their specific needs. She explains, “I treat each patient exactly how I would want my own family treated, which means offering the best technologies to treat them, tailoring treatment to their goals, and earning their trust.”

Dr. Kazmi earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy with high honors at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. As well as membership in multiple honor societies, she received the CVS Pharmaceutical Excellence Award and Excellence in Pathophysiology and Pharmacology award. To prepare for a career in medicine, Dr. Kazmi immersed herself in research as a Society of Toxicology fellow and neurotoxicology research intern.

A few months after receiving her undergraduate degree, Dr. Kazmi began medical school at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, also in New Brunswick. During her time as a medical student, Dr. Kazmi served as a chairperson on the American Medical Student Association. She also worked as a staff pharmacist at Pathmark Stores Inc.

After earning her medical degree, Dr. Kazmi completed her residency in internal medicine at UMDNJ- Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She then joined the University Center at Princeton and St. Peters University Hospital as a house physician. Meanwhile, Dr. Kazmi volunteered as a faculty member at her alma mater and served as a fellow within the Department of Hematology and Oncology. After a year in the role of Chief Fellow, Dr. Kazmi joined Hope Community Cancer Center as a hematologist and oncologist.

As a result of Dr. Kazmi’s commitment to the medical profession, she is board certified in hematology, oncology, internal medicine, and as a licensed physician and pharmacist. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, and the Medical Society of New Jersey. Throughout her career, Dr. Kazmi has written abstracts and conducted numerous cancer research studies.

When asked why she chose to join CTCA, Dr. Kazmi explains, “I was looking for a place that not only wanted to administer conventional medicine, such as chemotherapy, but also wanted to treat the entire person, incorporating a variety of therapeutic modalities. This total care model really sets CTCA apart from other cancer hospitals.”

Dr. Kazmi describes the CTCA care model as one in which the patient is the team leader, gently guided by herself and other medical team members. She describes, “I provide information regarding their disease, treatment options, and offer my expert recommendation. It is about maintaining open dialogue with patients.”

Between work, time with her husband, and being the parent of two young boys, Dr. Kazmi stays busy. She is fluent in Hindi, the official language in India, and Gujarati, spoken in India and Pakistan. She also speaks some Urdu, the official language of Pakistan.
