“When working with patients, my goal is to help them discover strategies for coping with and tolerating their diagnosis. I try to help create in patients the realization that they can feel more in control of their disease, rather than feeling victimized by it,” says Linda Sullivan, LCSW. Sullivan is a mind-body therapist at CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center (Eastern).
A licensed clinical social worker, Sullivan earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from La Salle University in Philadelphia. She also earned certification as a psychotherapist from the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia.
Sullivan has over 10 years of clinical experience practicing psychotherapy, including individual, group, family, and couple therapy. Prior to joining CTCA, she worked in various treatment settings, including Family Service of Burlington County, New Jersey; Drenk Behavioral Health Center in Hainesport, New Jersey; and Northwestern Human Services in Philadelphia.
In addition, Sullivan has maintained her own private practice, where she has provided clinical presentations to patients. She also trained in family therapy at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Sullivan joined the mind-body team at Eastern in September 2008. “My work with patients is informed by psychodynamics, meaning the relationship that I establish with my patients is the foundation of my treatment with them,” Sullivan says. She says she uses this therapeutic attachment to help her patients understand the interrelationships they have with family members, friends and other loved ones.
Of her work at CTCA, Sullivan says, “I am honored to be in a position each day to become an intimate member of my patients’ treatment team—to provide caring, support, and hope." She says she strives to facilitate emotional healing in her patients so they can focus on being well and strong throughout their cancer treatment.
The mind-body team at Eastern works closely with many other disciplines, particularly the Pastoral Care Department. “When someone is diagnosed with cancer, psychological and spiritual concerns are always present,” says Sullivan. “The relationship with Pastoral Care is fascinating, as both departments work towards encouraging and strengthening the patient’s mind and spirit.”
When asked what she likes most about working at CTCA, Sullivan says: “Here, I have the privilege to partner with, nurture, and take care of patients who are most in need of care and nurturance. I try to help patients gain insight and come to believe that they are entitled to joy, peace of mind and contentment, regardless of their circumstances.”
