A naturopathic clinician at CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center, Jeffrey Sager is part of a unique approach to patient care. In describing what makes the Naturopathic Medicine Program at Eastern unique, Sager says it is “our strong foundation and commitment to integrative cancer care and our patient-centered approach.”
Sager has extensive training in a range of naturopathic treatment modalities, including clinical nutrition, vitamin/mineral and amino acid therapies, botanical medicine, homeopathic medicine, hydrotherapy, and physical medicine.
Sager earned a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Sciences in Tempe, Arizona. He also earned a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Antioch University New England (formerly Antioch New England Graduate School) in Keene, New Hampshire. Sager holds a bachelor’s degree from Keene State College, where he graduated magna cum laude.
Sager’s clinical training and community involvement demonstrates his personal commitment to integrative medicine and patient care. Prior to joining CTCA, Sager spent several years on staff of the inpatient psychiatric unit at the Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester in Manchester, New Hampshire. Among his responsibilities there, Sager led mind-body medicine group programs for chronic pain sufferers.
Prior to this position, Sager served as a naturopathic clinician at the Professional Alliance for Total Health in Londonderry, New Hampshire. He also helped design, launch, and expand a 400-bed AIDS hospice program at a Buddhist temple in Thailand.
In addition, Sager completed various clinical internships in integrated medical center environments, as well as training in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD). Sager has developed numerous presentations, research studies, and articles on naturopathic medicine and mental health topics.
Sager joined the Naturopathic Medicine Department at CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center in August 2007. When asked what he likes best about working at CTCA, Sager says he appreciates “being part of an open-minded, integrative team that provides each patient with the best opportunity for healing.”
Sager and the rest of the naturopathic medicine team at Eastern work closely with CTCA oncologists and other clinicians to complement patients’ conventional cancer treatments with natural therapies. “We interface with all of the departments to provide the best integrative approach,” he says. According to Sager, naturopathic medicine can help reduce some of the unpleasant side effects patients experience during cancer treatment.
Reinforcing the goal of CTCA to treat the whole person, not just the cancer, Sager says his overall goal for patients is “to provide the best naturopathic care, as part of an integrative team approach, to support the patient on all levels.”
Sager is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians (OncANP), and Pennsylvania Association of Naturopathic Physicians (PANP).
