Medical Director of Integrative Oncology Programs & Medical Oncologist
Dr. Eiko Klimant is the Medical Director of Integrative Oncology Programs at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Eastern Regional Medical Center. He is board certified in medical oncology and internal medicine, as well as hospice and palliative medicine. He has extensive clinical experience in the management of solid organ tumors such as colon, pancreatic, prostate, lung and breast cancers and is particularly interested in gastroenterological cancers, genitourinary cancers and neuro-oncology.
Dr. Klimant earned a bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. There, he was a biology honors student and earned an International Educational Scholarship.
Dr. Klimant then earned a medical degree from Heinrich Heine University School of Medicine in Duesseldorf, Germany. He also completed subinternships in internal medicine and surgery at the University of Nantes in Nantes, France, where he received an ERAMUS scholarship.
Following medical school, Dr. Klimant served as Junior House Officer in internal medicine at the University of Glasgow, Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock, Scotland. He also spent several years as a resident in general surgery, internal medicine and emergency medicine at the University of Rennes affiliated hospitals in France.
In 1997, Dr. Klimant moved
back to the United States. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Norwalk Hospital, an affiliate of Yale University in Norwalk, Connecticut. Dr.
Klimant then completed a fellowship in medical oncology at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.
Dr. Klimant also served as a Bayer
Research Fellow at Bayer Corporation in West Haven, Connecticut. There, he was involved in clinical research on strategic drug development as well as clinical trials of new anti-cancer
agents.
Prior to joining CTCA, Dr. Klimant was appointed as Medical Director, and later as Chairman, of the Department of Oncology/Hematology at the Marshfield Clinic in Weston/Wausau, Wisconsin. At Marshfield Clinic, Dr. Klimant was a coinvestigator in multiple oncology clinical research trials. He was also a member of the IRB for some time. In addition, Dr. Klimant was a member of the faculty at the University of Wisconsin.
Since joining CTCA, Dr. Klimant says, “I am most impressed with the willingness and openness to finding new and better ways for cancer treatment at CTCA. I also very much appreciate the respect that CTCA has for each patient. Patients and caregivers love being here, which also is true for the hospital staff.”
At CTCA, Dr. Klimant works within a multidisciplinary team to provide patient-centered cancer care. Additionally, he strongly supports the development of integrative oncology programs. He is working on a program which uses intravenous vitamin C in combination with chemotherapy as a supportive care option for CTCA patients.
Dr. Klimant is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, American College of Physicians and the Society for Integrative Oncology. He is fluent in English, German and French.
