Dr. Chengyu Liu
Lead Physician, Quality of Life Center
“Fighting cancer can affect all aspects of cancer patients’ and their family’s quality of life,” says Dr. Chengyu Liu. “The Quality of Life Center at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Eastern Regional Medical Center is highly skilled at relieving suffering and pain, strengthening patients’ hope and empowering their lives.”
Board certified in internal medicine and hospice and palliative medicine, Dr. Liu leads the hospital’s Quality of Life Center. He provides care to patients who are experiencing side effects and symptoms such as pain, nausea and vomiting. Dr. Liu works closely with patients’ medical oncologists and other care team members. He also leads the pain management team at the hospital.
Dr. Liu says the great thing about working at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) is the focus on the Mother Standard® of care. In his office, he keeps a card from a former patient’s daughter which reads: “You are one of the most caring and compassionate doctors I’ve ever met.”
Dr. Liu believes in always being available to address his patients’ questions and concerns. “I treat people how I would want to be treated in the same situation," he says.
Dr. Liu holds a PhD in biomedical sciences from the University of Texas – Houston Health Science Center. He received the Harry S. Isabel C. Cameron Foundation Award in cardiovascular disease research and the University of Texas MD Anderson Research Achievement Award.
After earning a medical degree from China Medical University and a PhD from the University of Texas, Dr. Liu began his career as a postdoctoral research scientist in the Department of Genetics and Development at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. He then joined Capital Health System in Trenton, New Jersey, where he served as a medical resident. During his stay, he won the Resident Research Award.
Before joining CTCA, Dr. Liu worked as an academic hospitalist at Cogent Healthcare Inc./Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Dr. Liu explains that the cancer experts at CTCA constantly seek to improve the patient experience. Part of this entails offering innovative, evidence-based treatments and combining conventional and complementary medicine. Dr. Liu enjoys being part of a team that is fully dedicated to the patient: “Our ability to work together characterizes CTCA. We have a very spirited team here," he says.
When asked what he loves most about CTCA, Dr. Liu says it is the patient relationships, “After getting to know the patients, you feel as though you become part of their family. I love the connections I make with patients.”
Dr. Liu is a member of the American College of Physicians and American Association for Advancement of Science. He has published articles in Development and Molecular and Cellular Biology, along with numerous abstracts.
Even with a busy schedule, Dr. Liu always finds time to watch and play basketball. He is a devoted fan of the Houston Rockets and Yao Ming.
