“I came to Cancer Treatment Centers of America because I believe this organization to be unique in its commitment to live out its mission of hope and healing,” says naturopathic oncology resident Sheba Roy. “Having worked in hospitals all of my life, I have never seen an organization as committed to valuing each patient as a whole person.”
In November 2010, Roy began a residency in naturopathic oncology at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Eastern Regional Medical Center. As a first year resident, she is completing a series of oncology-focused rotations with staff naturopathic clinicians, medical oncologists and other specialists. Her training includes supervised clinical practice in oncology, homeopathic, nutritional, and botanical medicine, as well as coursework in these modalities.
“I chose to work in integrative care because I believe it is the best and most progressive medicine we have to offer our patients,” says Roy. “We need drugs, surgery and radiation and we need adjunctive and natural therapies to help us heal faster, preserve quality of life and better tolerate those interventions.”
Roy received a bachelor’s degree in biological anthropology and print journalism from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She went on to complete a post-baccalaureate premedical program at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She earned a doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington, where she was top of her clinical class, a faculty-nominated mentor and nominee for the Les Griffith’s Founders Award for Extraordinary Service.
Roy has a longstanding commitment to underserved and stigmatized communities in the U.S. and in developing nations. She started working in pediatric hospice at 17 years old under the direct supervision of Mother Teresa in Kolkata, India. Roy continues to return to India to work in adult hospice. First-generation American and multilingual, she was raised both in Africa and Detroit, Michigan and has worked extensively in patient education about cancer prevention, chronic disease, infections, and wellness.
Roy is a member of several professional organizations, including the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians; American Association of Naturopathic Physicians; Society for Integrative Oncology; Physicians for Human Rights; and Pennsylvania Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
