Michelle Niesley at Eastern Regional Medical Center

“At CTCA, everyone is invested in seeing each person receive the best care possible, in a warm environment where many forms of healing can occur,” says Michelle Niesley, a naturopathic oncology provider for Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). “It is the mutual respect between patients and those who care for them that makes CTCA a very special place.”

Niesley is a key member of many of our patients’ care teams. She provides safe, evidence-based recommendations for natural therapies (e.g., vitamins, minerals, herbal medicines) to help improve their quality of life during and after treatment for cancer.

She says, “I educate my patients to help them make decisions regarding their care that resonate with them. I frequently use metaphors to make it easy for patients to understand how a nutrient or herb may help them. This encourages patients to take a more active role in their own wellness.”

A Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology (FABNO), Niesley earned a doctorate degree in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington. She holds a bachelor’s degree in general science from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon, and a master's degree in evaluative clinical sciences from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Niesley was introduced to integrative medicine as a naturopathic oncology resident at CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion, Illinois. She completed a two-year naturopathic oncology residency at the hospital in 2003. After gaining significant experience as a naturopathic medicine provider at healthcare facilities in New Hampshire, Oregon, Illinois, and Alaska, Niesley returned to the CTCA family of hospitals in August 2010 at CTCA at Eastern Regional Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

“After spending time in a variety of integrative practices, I have learned that when it comes to caring for patients with cancer, CTCA does the best job of combining naturopathic medicine, nutrition, mind-body medicine, and other integrative options with standard oncology treatment. Other facilities may offer a few options to patients not commonly found in large cancer centers, but none offer the team approach that CTCA does.”

Niesley has presented on topics such as women’s health, quality of life post-cancer treatment, complementary and alternative medicine, and integrative oncology at several clinical conferences and seminars. She has also been published in the journal Integrative Cancer Therapies, the Clinical Journal of Pain and the Oxford Textbook of Paediatric Palliative Care. Additionally, she cowrote a book titled ND Notes: Basic Science Review.

She is a member of the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, and the Society for Integrative Oncology.
