"My goal as a physician who treats cancer patients is to add days to patients’ lives, but even more so, to add life to people’s days. Maximizing benefit, minimizing detriment and allowing people to live the best quality of life possible is essential."

Dr. Michael Rotkowitz
Hematologist-Oncologist & Medical Oncologist

In July 2011, Dr. Michael Rotkowitz became a member of the integrated team of cancer experts at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Eastern Regional Medical Center. He says a number of factors attracted him to CTCA, including the integrated and patient-empowered approach to care, teamwork atmosphere and cutting-edge techniques in interventional radiology and radiation oncology.

The Mother Standard® of care at CTCA also struck a chord with Dr. Rotkowitz, whose own mother is a cancer survivor. He thinks of her every day as he treats patients with genuine compassion.

Dr. Rotkowitz believes it is essential that personalized therapy for cancer patients has to be much more comprehensive than treatment based on molecular targets, genetic profiling and tumor biology. He notes, “Personalized therapy means the oncologist should become the counselor, healer, confidant and advocate the patient needs throughout their treatment. At CTCA, I have the ability to practice personalized medicine in its truest form.”

Board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology, Dr. Rotkowitz earned a medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency in New York City at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, University Hospital of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. While at St. Luke's, Dr. Rotkowitz served on several hospital committees and was named Resident of the Year. He then went on to complete a hematology-oncology fellowship at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Before pursuing a medical degree, Dr. Rotkowitz received a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences at the University of Delaware.

Dr. Rotkowitz has conducted research in the fields of multiple myeloma and adoptive immunotherapy. He belongs to the American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Medical Society of the State of New York.

Dr. Rotkowitz has traveled throughout Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. He completed clinical rotations in the Czech Republic, England, Grenada, St. Vincent and Guatemala. His interests include playing the trumpet and listening to jazz. In both his appreciation of music and as a perpetual student of the art of medicine, he notes that listening will remain his most important strength and that his passion for both will involve a lifetime of education, inspiration, improvisation and practice. Both medicine and music possess the power to heal and the ability to relieve pain. They both celebrate the harmonies of existence. Dr. Rotkowitz is also an avid fan of the New York Mets and New York Jets.
