"It is important to me that patients are able to get the best and most useful nutrition information to take home and incorporate into their daily routine."
Danielle Kennedy, RD, LDN
Clinical Oncology Dietitian
“I enjoy building a relationship with every patient,” says Danielle Kennedy, a registered and licensed dietitian at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Eastern Regional Medical Center. “At CTCA, we are completely patient focused, which allows our patients to feel a sense of empowerment. Each patient is at the center of our treatment model and the focus of our care.”
Kennedy joined the CTCA nutrition therapy team in December 2010. She recalls, “I read and heard about the unique treatment model that CTCA offers and it immediately piqued my interest. I imagined the role of the dietitian would be well-respected in the integrated model at CTCA, and I knew I would be able to expand my knowledge in the oncology field and be able to help cancer patients.”
Kennedy works on a dedicated care team led by the Chief of Medical Oncology, Dr. Rudolph Willis. She provides nutrition consultations and recommendations customized to each patient she sees, helping them maintain strength and manage treatment side effects, such as nausea and decreased appetite.
“The education I provide helps patients retain that sense of empowerment,” adds Kennedy. “When I see their faces light up or have a smile that shows, ‘Hey, I’ve gotten it,’ I feel I have done my job well.”
She also notes, “I find it is most important, during my daily practice, to meet each patient’s individual needs. When approaching a consult, I may have a specific topic of discussion in mind, but the patient may approach me with a completely separate set of concerns or issues. I work to meet them half way and bring it all together.”
Kennedy earned a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics from La Salle University in Philadelphia. She went on to complete a dietetic internship through the university. She belongs to both the American Dietetic Association and the Philadelphia Dietetic Association.
Prior to CTCA, Kennedy served as a clinical dietitian at a hospital in suburban Philadelphia. She also has experience as a diabetes educator.
