Intake Physician
As an intake physician at our Philadelphia hospital, Dr. Benjamin Sussman provides medical consultations to many of our new patients. He performs comprehensive history and physical examinations on patients and helps them with medical issues that may arise during their intake stay. He also collaborates with our medical oncologists to review patients’ medical history and make recommendations for further evaluation and treatment by our radiation oncology, surgical oncology and medical oncology teams.
Dr. Sussman says there were several reasons why he decided to join Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) in 2012. He notes, “It’s very much a family here at CTCA. From the moment I walk in, I am greeted by friendly faces and people here have a genuine interest in how we can work together to help our patients.”
Dr. Sussman adds of what drew him to CTCA, “In addition to advanced technology, innovative surgical procedures and evidence-based medicines, we offer understanding and hope. Patients are treated like individuals, not a disease. As an osteopathic physician trained in offering a holistic approach to primary care, being able to provide patient-centered care in a fully integrated environment is wonderful.”
The Mother Standard® of care at CTCA also made an impression on Dr. Sussman. He says, “Two of my cousins, who were very much like brothers to me, battled cancer. While both lost their fight, their tragedy touched me in many ways. Their tragedy was compounded by a sheer lack of hope given to them by their medical providers. I never want to forget that caregivers need support as well, and that hope is essential to getting better.”
Board certified in family medicine, Dr. Sussman earned an osteopathic medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania. He completed a traditional osteopathic rotating internship at Frankford Hospitals (Aria Health) in Philadelphia, followed by additional training in the emergency medicine/internal medicine combined residency program at Aria Hospital. He also completed a family medicine residency at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Before studying medicine, Dr. Sussman completed a bachelor’s degree in biology at the Pennsylvania State University.
Dr. Sussman has been published in the journal Osteopathic Family Medicine and the DrexelMed Journal. He has also co-authored research that was presented at a national conference for the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians. As a resident, he was presented with an award by the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors and the North American Primary Care Research Group for Outstanding Resident Education in Research and Scholarship. He has also been a recipient of a Patients’ Choice Award from Vitals.com and American Registry, given to the region’s favorite physicians, as voted on by patients.
Dr. Sussman is a member of numerous professional associations, including the American Osteopathic Association, American Academy of Family Physicians and the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association. His interests include anticoagulation, sports medicine, conditioning training, weight loss and nutrition.
During time off, Dr. Sussman enjoys spending time with friends and family, including his wife and young son.
A Philadelphia native, Dr. Sussman is a devoted fan of the Eagles, Flyers and Phillies. He also enjoys playing basketball. Every year he competes in his family’s tournament, the Eric and Andy Sussman Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, named after his cousins who lost their battle with hepatocellular cancer and melanoma. The tournament raises money for cancer research and is a great event for the whole family to enjoy.
