Sharing my experiences, knowledge and expertise through blogging is new for me, but exciting. I am the Medical Director of the Radiation Oncology Department at CTCA outside Chicago. My goal in writing this blog is to inform, educate and provide hope and courage to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers.
First, I’d like to share a little bit about myself and what led me to pursue a career in radiation oncology.
My father was a family psychiatrist so there were medical textbooks and literature in the house. In high school, I read one of my father’s books on the human nervous system. The subject matter absolutely fascinated me. I was amazed by the human body’s intricate design.
I enrolled at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, as a pre-med student. One summer I worked in Duke’s Radiology Oncology Department, an experience that opened up a whole new world of medicine to me and showed me how I could personally care for patients facing serious illness.
That summer, I worked with doctors on cutting-edge hyperthermia studies, which looked at the use of heat to treat disease. Here, the seed was planted that would ultimately lead me to become a radiation oncologist.
During my fourth year of medical school at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, I had the opportunity to choose an area of focus. In my rotations, I was introduced to many specialties. However, the time I spent in radiation oncology left a lasting impression on me. I liked the idea of being able to interact closely with patients and provide them with state-of-the-art technologies for their very personal battle with cancer.
These experiences and my desire to provide patient-centered care led me to CTCA at Midwestern. Our radiation oncology team is part of an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to fighting cancer. We work together to create a culture of medical excellence focused on patients and their healing.
I am excited to work with the compassionate physicians and clinicians at Midwestern, all who have advanced training to provide the latest in comprehensive cancer care and utilize cutting-edge technology that is on par with academic medical centers.
I look forward to blogging about subjects related to radiation oncology. My hope is that something I share resonates with you and helps you – wherever you are on your journey with cancer.
