Advanced Diagnostics: Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan

We use positron emission tomography (PET) to create detailed, computerized pictures of organs and tissues inside the body for cancer diagnosis, staging and treatment planning.

A PET scan is a sophisticated nuclear scanning technique that reveals how the body is functioning, and uncovers areas of abnormal metabolic activity.

During a PET scan, the patient is first injected with a glucose (sugar) solution that contains a very small amount of radioactive material. The substance, which is absorbed by the particular organs or tissues being examined, gives off energy that is detected by a scanner, which produces the images.

A PET scan can be used to detect cancerous tissues and cells in the body that may not always be found through CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).
