Advanced Diagnostics: PET/CT Scan
We use an advanced nuclear imaging technique called PET/CT to accurately detect, diagnose and stage tumors.
A PET/CT scan creates detailed, computerized pictures of areas inside the body. The test merges two imaging technologies, positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT), into one machine for a single imaging session.
During the test, a radiopharmaceutical is injected into the patient intravenously, swallowed, or inhaled as a gas. The radioactive material accumulates in the area of the body being examined, where it gives off energy in the form of gamma rays and is detected by the scanner.
The CT image reveals the body’s anatomic structure. The PET image reveals the body’s metabolic function. When combined into one singular image, we can identify abnormal activity and know precisely where this activity is taking place. Thus, a PET/CT scan provides a more accurate and detailed picture of a tumor’s location and growth or spread than either test alone.
