Advanced Diagnostics: Bone Scan

A bone scan is an imaging technique our cancer doctors use to diagnose and monitor cancer. Specifically, we use bone scans to check for the presence of cancer, evaluate damage to the bones (e.g., fractures), and monitor conditions that can affect the bones (e.g., infection).

In a bone scan, a small dose of radioactive material in injected into a blood vessel, where it travels through the bloodstream. The material then gathers in the bones and is detected by a scanner through nuclear imaging. This helps show cell activity and function in the bones.

By capturing images of bones on a computer screen or on film, bone scans can reveal cancer that may have spread to the bone from a different primary site, such as the breast, prostate or lung. Bone scans are also used to check for bone injuries, arthritis, and infection.
