The Calypso® 4D Localization System™ helps our doctors deliver focused doses of radiation with greater accuracy to prostate cancer patients receiving external beam radiation therapy.
Also known as GPS for the Body®, this remarkable technology allows our radiation therapy team to locate the tumor and monitor the prostate’s motion continuously during treatment. Ultimately, it helps us target cancer cells, thereby avoiding harm to healthy tissues that surround a tumor.
Prostate cancer patients who receive external beam radiation therapy in conjunction with Calypso® first undergo an outpatient procedure much like a biopsy. Three Beacon® transponders are implanted into a patient’s prostate. Each transponder is as small as a grain of rice. The Beacon® transponders then communicate with Calypso® using safe, radiofrequency waves. This enables the radiation therapy team to see exactly where the prostate gland is and ensure that radiation is targeted to the tumor site as much as possible.
Calypso® is currently FDA approved for use in the treatment of prostate cancer. This promising technology may eventually be used in the treatment of other cancers, including breast and lung cancers.
