Cancers that affect women

Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women, followed by lung cancer, colorectal cancer and gynecologic cancers.

  • Breast cancer can occur in women of any age but it’s more likely after age 40. Routine screening can help improve the chances of early detection. Annual mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 for most women, while a breast exam by a doctor or nurse should be a regular part of a health exam beginning in woman’s 20s.
  • Lung cancer: Smoking causes more than 80 percent of all lung cancers but people who do not smoke can also have lung cancer.
  • Colorectal cancer is typically found in women aged 50 or older. Testing to find polyps before they become cancer is critical.
  • Gynecologic cancers: Uterine cancer occurs most often in women age 50 and older. Similarly, ovarian cancer is more likely as women get older. Cervical cancer, though, can affect any woman who is or has been sexually active.
