Colorectal cancer stages

Making an educated treatment decision begins with the stage, or progression, of the disease. The stage of colorectal cancer is one of the most important factors in evaluating treatment options.

Our cancer doctors use a variety of diagnostic tests to evaluate colorectal cancer and develop an individualized treatment plan. If you have been recently diagnosed, we will review your pathology to confirm you have received the correct diagnosis and staging information, and develop a personalized treatment plan. If you have a recurrence, we will perform comprehensive testing and identify a treatment approach that is suited to your needs.

Cancer Staging

Stage II colorectal cancer

Stage II colorectal cancer is divided into three subcategories: IIA, IIB and IIC. The difference between the categories lies in the extent to which the cancer has spread.

  • Stage IIA (T3, N0, M0): The cancer has grown into the outermost layers of the colon or rectum, but has not grown through them. It has not reached nearby organs or lymph nodes, and has not spread to distant organs.
  • Stage IIB (T4a, N0, M0): The cancer has grown through all of the layers of the colon or rectum, but has not grown into other organs or tissues.
  • Stage IIC (T4b, N0, M0): The cancer has grown through all of the layers of the colon or rectum, and has grown into nearby organs or tissues. The cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes or distant organs.
