Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy for Colorectal Cancer
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) helps radiation oncologists at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA):
- Treat recurrent tumors in an area of the body that has previously been treated with conventional radiation therapy
- Destroy colorectal cancer cells
- Spare healthy tissue that surrounds tumors
IMRT treatment is carefully planned using sophisticated software, which allows CTCA cancer experts to plan a precise dose of radiation in three dimensions, based on a colorectal tumor’s size, shape and location.
A high-tech, X-ray accelerator then targets the tumor, conforming radiation treatment to the exact shape of the tumor and modulating the intensity of the radiation beams with laser accuracy. The high doses of radiation are tightly focused on the tumor, limiting exposure to much of the nearby healthy tissue.
