HDR Brachytherapy for Colorectal Cancer
High-Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy is one of the innovative tools that radiation oncologists at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) use to target radiation directly to colorectal cancer tumors. By helping to concentrate radiation directly on tumors, HDR brachytherapy helps reduce damage to surrounding colon and rectal tissue, and also reduces the treatment time.
To deliver HDR brachytherapy, your CTCA oncologist first implants a catheter into the colorectal cancer tumor. Next, he/she uses a thin plastic tube to deliver a powerful, precisely-focused dose of radiation to the tumor. HDR brachytherapy is occasionally used to give an extra boost of radiation to a colorectal cancer tumor, or as part of a sphincter-sparing treatment plan to reduce the chances of needing a colostomy.
The best way to determine if you may be a candidate for HDR brachytherapy is to discuss it with your colorectal cancer treatment team at CTCA.
