Depending on the type and extent of colorectal surgery you receive, you may need to have a temporary or permanent colostomy. A colostomy is needed when your surgeon cannot reconnect the healthy portions of the colon.
During this surgical procedure, a segment of your colon is attached to the skin of the abdomen. Your surgical oncologist will create an artificial opening (called a stoma) in the lower abdomen to allow your body to eliminate waste. Typically, an odor-free pouching system is worn to collect waste. There are several varieties available to fit your unique lifestyle.
At Cancer Treatment Centers of America, we understand you may have a lot of questions and concerns about living with a colostomy. We will educate you and your loved ones about how to care for your colostomy. We will also be here to discuss any lifestyle changes you may be concerned about, and to support you throughout the entire process.
