Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) may be a colorectal cancer treatment option for you. At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), IMRT allows our cancer doctors to place radioactive material directly into, or as close as possible to, the tumor site with great precision.

One advantage of using IMRT for colorectal cancer treatment is that it spares more of the surrounding healthy tissue compared to standard radiation therapy. By allowing our cancer experts to custom tailor the dose of radiation around the geometry of the colorectal tumor, IMRT helps spare nearby tissue and can help reduce common radiation side effects.

The following are two ways that IMRT differs from conventional radiation therapy:

  • IMRT uses advanced software to plan a precise dose of radiation in 3-D (instead of only a few angles), based on the colorectal cancer tumor’s size, shape and location.
  • IMRT delivers radiation directly to the tumor and modulates the intensity of the radiation with laser accuracy.
