Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States for both men and women. Also referred to as colorectal cancer, colon cancer occurs in the large intestine (colon) or the rectum (end of the colon). Although most often found among people over the age of 50, colon cancer can also occur in younger people, though rarely in teens. Studies have linked colon cancer to high-calorie diets that are high in fat and low in fiber. This means that adopting a high-fiber, low-calorie diet is crucial to the prevention of colon cancer, particularly for those with a family history of colorectal cancer.

At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), our integrative approach to colon cancer treatment provides a powerful blend of conventional medical treatments and complementary/alternative therapies. By combining conventional treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation with alternative treatments, we are able to fight colon cancer on as many fronts as possible. Just a few of the conventional colon cancer treatments we offer include the following:

  • Surgery is performed to remove colon cancer tumors, whenever practical. This may even be the case for metastatic colon cancer, where the tumors have spread to other areas. This may help prevent future complications, such as blockage of the bowel or bleeding.
  • Intra-arterial chemotherapy delivers high doses of colon cancer chemotherapy drugs directly to recurrent tumors, while helping to spare healthy surrounding tissue.
  • Fractionated-dose chemotherapy administers anticancer drugs into smaller doses, given over longer periods of time rather than in one large dose. This unique delivery approach exposes colon cancer cells to the drugs for a longer period of time, while also helping to reduce common side effects, including nausea and vomiting.

At CTCA, you will also have the opportunity to enhance your colon cancer treatment plan with a variety of complementary and alternative therapies, such as naturopathic medicine, nutritional therapy, mind-body medicine, image enhancement and spiritual support. Our whole-patient approach to colon cancer treatment means that we treat the patient as a whole—body, mind and soul.

CTCA is with you every step of the way in what truly is the fight of your life.
