Pancreatic Cancer Survival Statistics and Results

Many cancer treatment hospitals do not publish patient survival rates and, unfortunately, a national program comparing the quality of cancer care of multiple hospitals doesn't exist. However, the National Cancer Institute collects information on cancer incidence and survival across the United States and periodically provides that information to the public through its Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program.

We asked an independent, third party biostatistician to compare the survival rates experienced by advanced-stage pancreatic cancer patients who were treated at CTCA with similar data reported in the SEER Program.

This chart depicts a comparison of advanced-stage (defined as distant metastasis) survival rates at CTCA hospitals to publicly available data from the National Cancer Institute Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results Program. CTCA makes no claims about the efficacy of specific treatments or the delivery of care. Cancer is a complex disease and each person's medical condition is different. Cancer patients should not expect the same results when treating at a CTCA hospital.

These results include statistically significant survival rates of advanced-stage pancreatic cancer patients who were diagnosed between 2000 and 2003 and who treated at CTCA hospitals. To help you as you make your cancer treatment decision, we present the results they experienced.

Compared to patients with similar diagnoses represented in the SEER database, the survival rate for CTCA patients was approximately:

• 26.5 percentage points higher at six months
• 18.8 percentage points higher at 1 year
• 8.1 percentage points higher at 18 months

About the SEER Program

We compare our data with that of the SEER database because it is the only source of population-based information in the United States that includes the cancer's stage at the time of diagnosis along with patient survival data. The SEER Program collects such information from specific geographic areas representing 26 percent of the US population and cancer mortality for the entire US. At the time of this analysis, the most recent information available for a comparison between the SEER database and CTCA advanced-stage cancer patient population pertained to patients diagnosed between 2000 and 2003.

Comparing CTCA patient data to the SEER database has inherent advantages and disadvantages and available data may not provide a realistic comparison as some resources are subjective and published results are not necessarily recent.

Despite such limitations, CTCA strives to provide useful and empowering information as you consider your cancer care options. Keeping in mind that these results do not provide a comparison of CTCA results versus those of any cancer treatment facility in particular, we hope it nonetheless empowers you with the information you may be seeking.
