Revlimid®

Revlimid® is an oral immunomodulatory derivative (IMiD) approved for the treatment of multiple myeloma, as well as a subtype of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) known as deletion 5q cytogenetic abnormality.

Structurally similar to thalidomide, Revlimid® works within the bone marrow to stop or slow the growth of cancerous and/or abnormal cells in the bone marrow, helping normal cells to perform their functions.

At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), we take a variety of patient-specific factors into account when deciding, together with you, whether or not therapies such as Revlimid® are suitable for your unique needs. We also offer a range of complementary treatments designed to reduce side effects and fight cancer on all fronts.

To learn more about our whole-patient approach to cancer treatment with Revlimid® and other therapies, chat now with one of our Oncology Information Specialists or call 800-615-3055 today.

Side Effects of Revlimid®

Revlimid® may cause common, as well as serious, side effects that require immediate medical attention. Because it also carries a risk of causing birth defects, pregnant women should not take Revlimid®.

It is important to talk to your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects of Revlimid®:

  • Blood clots in the vein or lungs, characterized by shortness of breath, arm or leg swelling, or unusual chest pain
  • Low blood counts, characterized by unusual weakness and fatigue, fever or infections that do not go away, excessive bruising or unusual bleeding

You should also contact your healthcare professional to help manage the following less serious side effects of Revlimid®:

  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Rashes
  • Dry skin
  • Itchy skin
  • Muscle cramps
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Insomnia
  • Sudden dizziness or headaches

Please note that the above list does not include all possible side effects of Revlimid®. It is important to communicate with your healthcare professional about any adverse effects you may be experiencing.

At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), your cancer care team will be there to help you understand, anticipate and respond to Revlimid® side effects. We also offer complementary therapies designed to improve quality of life and manage common side effects of cancer treatment.

Cancers Revlimid® Treats

Multiple myeloma occurs when plasma cells in the bone marrow mutate and proliferate. An important part of the immune system, plasma cells are responsible for producing disease-fighting antibodies.

In combination with dexamethasone, Revlimid® is indicated for treating multiple myeloma in patients who have already received at least one prior form of therapy. Clinical studies have shown Revlimid® to improve immune system response and slow the progression of the disease.

Deletion 5q Myelodysplastic Syndromes

Deletion 5q myelodysplastic syndrome (del 5q MDS) is particular type of blood disorder which occurs when the bone marrow does not produce enough healthy red blood cells.

Revlimid® is indicated for treatment of patients with low- or intermediate-1 risk del 5q MDS, who require frequent blood transfusions to manage anemia (low red blood cell counts). Because Revlimid® fights abnormal blood cells in the immune system, it may help eliminate or reduce the need for frequent blood transfusions.
