Approved for the adjuvant (following surgery) treatment of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer, Femara® is a once-daily tablet which helps to reduce the risk of recurrence following initial breast cancer treatment.
Femara® works by inhibiting aromatase, the enzyme which produces estrogen in postmenopausal women. By reducing the amount of estrogen in the body, Femara® starves estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) tumors, allowing hormone-dependent breast cancer cells to remain inactive.
At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), your breast cancer specialists will diagnose your tumor as estrogen receptor-positive or negative (ER-), and will help you determine if Femara® is the right cancer treatment option for you.

For use in treating advanced stage breast cancer, Femara® may be an effective treatment for patients who are resistant to tamoxifen.
Common side effects of patients taking Femara® include the following:
- Headaches
- Muscle or joint pain
- Hot flashes (warmth or redness in your face or chest)
- Weight gain
- Night sweats
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Swelling of the ankles, feet or hands
It is important to note that these are not all of the side effects associated with Femara® treatment. Some side effects were shown to be more common in patients using Femara® when compared with tamoxifen, including nausea, weight gain, night sweats, fatigue, as well as osteoporosis.
At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), your breast cancer doctors will explain the potential side effects of Femara®, as well as other treatment options available. You and your care team will discuss a range of innovative therapies. Together, you'll determine the right options for your breast cancer treatment.
Femara® is an adjuvant treatment option for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive early stage breast cancer.
For postmenopausal women who have nearly completed (within three months) five years of tamoxifen therapy, Femara® is also approved for extended adjuvant treatment.
In addition, Femara® is approved for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer (cancer which has spread to another part of the body) in postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive or estrogen receptor-unknown breast cancer.
At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), you will work closely with your breast cancer specialists to determine the right treatment options for you.
