CTCA Chief Medical Officer and five-year cancer survivor, Dr. Edgar Staren discusses benefits of new therapies and introduces an integrative approach to cancer care in upcoming webinar

(CHICAGO) February 10, 2010 – The February 16 online seminar “Be Empowered: Advancements in Healthcare” presents cancer patients and caregivers with the opportunity to learn about advances in cancer care. This highly informative and empowering discussion led by Edgar Staren, MD, PhD, MBA, surgical oncologist and chief medical officer at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) is sure to leave patients and loved ones feeling they have gained more control and a heightened comprehension of their options for facing an often overwhelming journey.

This comprehensive webinar is available to patients and caregivers who are interested in learning about the latest in individualized treatment options, including advancements in surgery, radiation and genetics. Participants are introduced to the concept of integrative cancer care, incorporating nutrition, mind-body medicine and evidence-based supportive therapies into the healing process. Reflecting on his own experience, Dr. Staren shares “even though I already felt very strongly about the need for a mind-body-spirit approach to cancer, I hadn’t really understood its level of importance.” As a fifth-year sarcoma cancer survivor, Staren now has a personal understanding of the importance of addressing the whole needs of each individual patient versus treating the cancer alone. In addition to therapies, there is a strong significance placed on compassion and communication in cancer care – something that every patient should demand of their care team.

The forty-five minute presentation will supply the patient, caregiver and health care professional with the resources and tools necessary for understanding advanced treatment options and the power of integrative care. Cancer patients deserve to be empowered and at the center of their care when it comes to medical decisions. Participants can submit questions in advance upon registering or live, immediately following the webinar.

Sponsored by Cancer Treatment Centers of America, the webinar will begin at 7:00pm (CST) on Tuesday, February 16, 2010. Open registration began on January 21. Participants are encouraged to register prior to the event date by visiting www.cancercenter.com/webinar and clicking on the “Register” link to the right of the seminar title. The presentation will be recorded and can be accessed by visiting the Videos page at www.cancercenter.com/video.
