Joins Fellow Five-Year Cancer Survivors in Tree-Planting Ceremony
Zion, Illinois – June 5, 2009 – Rosalind Landrum returned to Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern) in suburban Chicago today to celebrate her five years as a breast cancer survivor. Landrum was joined by doctors, hospital administration and the clinical support team in a tree-planting ceremony in her honor. Five doves were released at the conclusion of the event to commemorate each year of her fighting survival.
Landrum, a 60-year-old resident of Panama City, Florida was diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer that had metastasized to her bones, lungs and 80% of her liver only three weeks after her annual physical. Landrum quickly began treatment at her local hospital but wanted to get a second opinion. She had seen TV commercials for CTCA and decided to check it out for herself. “It was really important to me to have someone who specialized in breast cancer, not just any oncologist. After meeting Dr. Citrin, my CTCA oncologist, who sees almost exclusively advanced stage breast cancer patients, I knew I would be traveling to CTCA for treatment,” she said.
Landrum’s treatment plan consisted of seven treatments of a combination of chemotherapy drugs delivered in fractionated doses and Tomotherapy® radiation treatment. She also worked closely with a nutritionist, naturopathic doctor, mind-body therapist and chaplain to help fight the disease on all fronts.
Now, after being a cancer survivor of five years, Landrum’s advice to other patients is simple, “Be positive, keep hope and stay connected with CTCA. The Lord and CTCA are my hope.”
Landrum remains an active participant in fighting cancer, having built a cancer ministry in Mississippi where she meets with, prays with and gives hope to other women fighting a cancer battle. She looks forward to picking up her granddaughter from school to spend time with her nearly every day. On the weekends, she and her husband, Gerald, enjoy biking and attending church every Sunday.
Landrum remarks ‘how sweet it is’ to “see how wondrous life can be when we have hope and a future ahead of us. Life is so precious. I am actually looking forward to getting old!”
This year, 104 CTCA patients are celebrating their five-year triumph over cancer at CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center. “At Cancer Treatment Centers of America, we surround each patient with a multidisciplinary care team that is designed to meet their individual needs,” said Anne Meisner, president and CEO at CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center. “Our team provides state of the art treatment protocols with fully integrated complementary therapies. We empower our patients to help them take control of their cancer and every patient is treated as though they were a member of our own family. We are so proud of our celebrants and honored to acknowledge and celebrate their journey and continued success,” she added.
