Zion, Illinois – June 6, 2008 – Peggy McCue returned to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Suburban Chicago to celebrate her five years as a Cancer Survivor.  McCue was joined by doctors and the clinical support team in a tree planting ceremony in her honor.
McCue, 58 of Newtown, PA, was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer after finding a lump in one of her breasts. Dissatisfied with the incorrect information she was getting from the hospital she was visiting in Philadelphia and being urged by her husband to look further into her options, McCue stumbled upon Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center.
A co-worker of McCue’s sister provided her with the link to cancercenter.com, where McCue found a telephone number to call an oncology information specialist. After reading through the information that was sent to her the day after her initial call, McCue decided she would check out her options at CTCA.
McCue, who was originally told that her only two options were a mastectomy or a lumpectomy, found more available options when she got to CTCA. “The doctor told me they would be able to simply remove the mass and then do chemotherapy and radiation.” Surgeons removed the lump and then McCue underwent chemotherapy and radiation.  McCue also received naturopathic therapy, taking a daily dose of vitamins that would help boost her immune system. In fact, McCue still follows the same vitamin regimen today.
“I’ve learned how to better take care of my body. I watch what I eat now. I eat more fruits, more salads. My quality of life has been much better because I’m really taking care of myself,” said McCue.
McCue, who is an avid member of her church’s bible fellowship and service organization, also collects money for the American Heart Association. During treatment, McCue was able to continue working for her family-owned business and very rarely felt anything worse than a bit fatigued, even after traveling the 678 miles from Newton to the Chicagoland area to receive treatment.
After five years of cancer survivorship, McCue reflects, “when you go through cancer, it’s a traumatic time during your life, but frankly, if I had to go through it again, I would be less fearful, because I know I would go to CTCA.”
This year 105 CTCA patients are celebrating their five year triumph over cancer at CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center. “At Cancer Treatment Centers of America, we empower our patients and help them take control of their cancer,” said Anne Meisner, president and CEO at CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center. “Our team provides state of the art treatment protocols with fully integrated complementary therapies. We are committed to treating the whole-person and every patient is treated as though they were a member of our own family. We are so proud of our celebrants and honored to acknowledge and celebrate their journey and their continued success,” she added.
