Brain Tumor Information

The National Cancer Institute reports that approximately 17,000 Americans are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year. While a brain tumor can develop at any age, studies show that they occur most frequently in one of two age groups: children 3 to 12 years old and adults 40 to 70 years old.

If a tumor begins to develop in the brain, it is called a primary brain tumor. A primary brain tumor falls into the category of either a benign or a malignant brain tumor. A malignant brain tumor is life threatening, invasive, and usually grows rapidly. If a brain tumor begins outside of the brain and then spreads to the brain, it forms what is called a metastatic brain tumor. A metastatic brain tumor is malignant by virtue of the fact that it begins as a cancer elsewhere in the body.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America: Brain Tumor Symptoms

In general, the symptoms of a brain tumor will depend on the size and location of the area affected by the brain tumor. Additionally, the symptoms produced by a malignant brain tumor often mimic the symptoms of other diseases, making the process of diagnosis more difficult. If a brain tumor continues to proliferate without being identified, it can begin to affect other parts of the brain, producing new symptoms. Possible symptoms of brain cancer to watch for include:

  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Mental difficulties
  • Uncoordinated
  • Seizures

If you experience these possible symptoms of a brain tumor, make it a priority to visit your doctor. Only a trained medical professional can accurately diagnose whether or not your symptoms are the result of a brain tumor.
