TomoTherapy® for Bone Cancer
TomoTherapy® Highly Integrated Adaptive Radiotherapy (HI-ART) is a state-of-the-art radiation therapy option for bone cancer patients at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). In one machine, the TomoTherapy® HI-ART system combines an advanced form of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), the accuracy of CT scanning technology, and advanced tools for planning and delivering radiation therapy.
TomoTherapy® HI-ART allows the CTCA radiation therapy team to treat hard-to-reach bone tumors with small, powerful radiation beams. By confirming the shape and position of the tumor shortly before treatment, this advanced treatment method uses CT scanning to precisely target cancer cells. At the same time, TomoTherapy® HI-ART helps limit radiation exposure to healthy surrounding tissue.
Traditional radiation therapies, while effective in many cases, can only project radiation on a bone cancer tumor from a few directions. TomoTherapy® HI-ART allows your CTCA radiation therapy team to deliver precise and powerful doses of radiation from 360-degrees. In addition, by employing the on-board CT scanner, TomoTherapy® HI-ART allows your care team to determine if the tumor has shifted or changed shape since your last treatment. This data allows your radiation oncologist to plan your treatment better to avoid unnecessary damage to muscle tissue, the spine, lungs, and other sensitive organs.
If you have reached your maximum tolerance dose of traditional radiation, or if your bone tumor is in a hard-to-reach area, advanced radiation bone cancer treatments like TomoTherapy® HI-ART may open new doors for you.
