Mind-Body Medicine for Bone Cancer

At Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), our Mind-Body Medicine Program (also called Psychoneuroimmunology, or PNI) helps bone cancer patients and their families explore and experience what is unique to them at all levels of their being—body, mind and spirit.

The CTCA care team believes bone cancer treatment should be multifaceted and patient-centered. This means every attempt is made to empower you to participate fully in your care team and in decisions about your treatment. In addition, we believe bone cancer treatment should include not only excellent medical care, but also attention to your nutritional, emotional, spiritual, and relationship issues.

In concert with traditional medical therapies, the Mind-Body Medicine Program at CTCA offers a range of individual and group learning opportunities. The goal is to leverage the healing power of the mind to help aid in the fight against bone cancer.

Defining Psychoneuroimmunology

Mind-body medicine is based on a relatively new area of care called Psychoneuroimmunology, or PNI. The “psycho" portion of the word refers to your cognitive thoughts, emotions and mood states. "Neuro" refers to your brain and nervous system. "Immunology" refers to your immune system. PNI explores the influence of all three on each other.

Mind-Body Medicine Techniques

The CTCA Mind-Body Medicine Program can help you cope with the physical and emotional issues that arise during bone cancer treatment. Using a variety of techniques, mind-body medicine can help you learn to direct your natural energies towards fighting bone cancer and achieving optimum health.

The innovative Mind-Body Medicine Program at CTCA offers bone cancer patients and their families the following therapies:

  • Individual, couple and family counseling
  • Stress management
  • Relaxation and guided imagery training
  • Support groups for you and your family
  • Educational resources
  • Laughter/Humor therapy
  • Energy therapies
