When you are undergoing cancer therapy treatments you will need to take special care of yourself to support the effectiveness of treatment, and perhaps minimize side effects. Good nutrition and prevention of weight loss will be very important during this time. Your body will need more “fuel” than normal, because your body will feel the need to repair rapidly from the effects of treatment such as radiation, surgery and/or chemotherapy. If you do not consume the fuel you need, your body will soon draw upon what it has stored; meaning fat and protein. If your body has to use stored protein, the result will be malnutrition and impaired functioning of your immune system. Therefore, you must give your body a constant supply of new nutrients to use as fuel during the healing process. This supply of nutrients includes calories, protein, vitamins and minerals.
The information in this section is aimed at helping you maintain good nutritional status and preventing weight loss during your treatments.
